Speaking at a recent symposium in UCD organised by the Chinese Econimic Association, Taoiseach Enda Kenny clearly laid out the key role trade with China would play in helping Ireland recover economically. In particular, the Taoiseach noted that while Ireland already benefits greatly from trade with China, “there is massive potential to enhance this further across a range of sectors” such as energy and green technologies, food and agriculture, financial services and aviation leasing, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and educational services. The Taoiseach also pointed out the growth in trade already achieved with China: annual bilateral trade between Ireland and China in the year 2000 was worth €715 million; last year, this figure had reached €4.2 billion
